Wanted to give you a quick heads up that this weekend, we'll be migrating our boards database behind the scenes, which may cause strange behavior between 10PM ET on Sunday, 2/10 and mid-Monday 2/11.

This is what you can expect. Your saved preferences, favorite boards and signatures will be unavailable during the migration. You will also not be able to save any preferences changes during this time. Rest assured that they all will return as soon as the migration period is over on Monday -- at least that's what they tell me.

You will be able to read and post while all this is going on.

We're sorry for the inconvenience!

~Erin

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

As They Say In Community, It's Never Really Goodbye...

Filed under: Off Topic, Status Updates, AIM Buddy Blog, Community Info, Marvelous Mob
After nine years and three months, today is my last day at AOL. It's been a wild ride, lots of fun, and a tremendous learning experience. Besides working with such great folks, where else could one have the opportunity to run such a large community operation and get to know some of the most interesting, savvy, and committed community members in the world? I will miss you, more than you know.

But... other opportunities, both personal and professional have been calling and the time is right for me to move on.

My AOL e-mail box will not work after today, so if you want to stay in touch, feel free to write to NYMeng@aol.com. You can also keep track of my daily activities by reading Hummingbird Mind.

Before you ask what I'll do with myself, I have some plans. Here's just a short list:

* Sleep
* Exercise
* Read
* Play with my new granddaughter
* Fish with my father
* Walk the beach
* Focus on the youth oriented non profit I started last year with some other parents
* Take many road trips
* Complete a book I've been writing

That's just a start. I plan to take off at least a month before starting some consulting work I've been offered.

I'll also still visit AOL communities, so if you see me online, feel free to ping me.

It's not goodbye, it's so long and see you soon.

-Nancie

P.S. Hey folks,

In the next several weeks, you will notice some changes as it pertains to AOL Community. Specifically, the AOLPeopleMGR mailbox will be decommissioned and all message boards will be migrated to a Member-Managed experience.

For a while now, we've informed you to write to AOLPeopleMGR for any concerns relating to AOL Community. As of February 8, we'll consolidate AOLPeopleMGR into the TOSGeneral@aol.com mailbox. Rest assured, you can still let our team know of any egregious Terms of Service violations or general questions relating to the enforcement of the Terms of Service and we'll handle it within 48 hours.

In the next several weeks, we'll no longer moderate "AOL Managed" community areas. We provide tools (like message board filters) that empower the user experience, as well as the ability to report inappropriate content to us for further review via Notify AOL.

~Joseph

Admittedly, it stumped us for a bit as we investigated -- but now we have a fix that should remedy this problem in just a few steps.

We posted the details regarding the fix on the AOL Help Web site, with an easy to remember URL so you can share it with your other buddies who use Windows Vista:

http://help.channels.aol.com/topic.adp?topicId=aim-6-windows-vista-fix2

Essentially, you will need to uninstall the AIM software, enable the User Account Control (UAC) security setting, download some Windows Updates, download and install AIM again. All these details (including pictures) are available at this help article. There's also a more colorful version of it available here, too.

We understand this can be frustrating and AIM and Microsoft teams are currently working on providing a long-term solution. In the meantime, be sure that you are using the latest version of AIM and install updates that you might receive in the future.

We'd like to know if this fixed the problem! Please feel welcome to leave feedback in the comments below, or drop on by the message board to discuss it with other avid AIM users.

~Joseph

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

AIM 6.8 Beta is Now Available, Offers 'Real-Time IM'

Filed under: New Features, AIM 6, AIM Beta, Featured Items, AIM Buddy Blog, Community Info
Hi, folks.

I just wanted to let you know that a new version of AIM is available for testing. The newest feature that is being introduced is Real-Time IM.

Real-Time IM lets you directly connect to one of your buddies, and as you type, your buddy reads exactly what you're writing (or deleting, too). This new feature requires both buddies to use AIM 6.8 to try out this feature. The AIM team is interested to hear what you think about this new feature, so be sure to send your feedback.

Here are a few screen shots of this new feature:

I'll describe five ways you can better organize your Buddy List, so not only is it useful, it's cool, too.

Manage Your Groups
One of the most overlooked features of the Buddy List is the groups. You can create many more groups to sort your buddy list into categories more than just Family, Co-Workers and Buddies. Inside AIM 6.5, you can create a new group for your buddies by clicking on the +/- button and clicking Add Group. Make up a name for this group -- it's alright, only you can see this group. Here is where that menu is:

Use Friendly Names
Instead of "Buddy024453," you can name your buddies with Friendly Names, which makes it easier to see who they are without thinking about it. It can also save you from sending IMs to the wrong person by mistake. To do this, right-click on a screen name in your Buddy List and click Edit, then enter a nickname for your Buddy. Illustrated below is an example of my screen name turned into a Friendly Name:
<img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" alt="This is a picture of an example of AIM "Friendly Names"" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.peopleconnectionblog.com/media/2008/01/aim-friendly-names-example.gif" />

Change Your Buddy List Display Settings
If you don't want to see your Buddies' status messages, you don't have to see it. You can adjust the view of your Buddy List anytime by clicking on the View menu and select Status Messages to hide or show status messages (small text below buddies), Offline Buddies to hide, show or group buddies who are offline into a group and more. You can also sort your Buddy List alphabetically or continue to separate it in groups.

Control those Buddy Notifications
The key to multitasking effectively while doing the things you love -- like updating your profile, sending an e-mail or posting a blog entry -- is to manage your distractions. One of the ways you can prevent your buddies from interrupting you, is to choose which Buddy Notifications you'd like to receive. To change your Buddy Notifications in AIM 6.5, press F7 (top row of your keyboard), click Notifications on the left side and select just the type of notifications you'd like to receive.

Link Those Names!
You most likely have more than one screen name, so AIM offers the ability to link up to seven different screen names together so you only need to sign in once to all of them simultaneously. Screen Name linking works with AIM Mail, too. To link your screen names, you can do it via the Web or a link within the AIM software by pressing F7:

There are probably more ways to organize your Buddy List, but it's clear that AIM 6.5 makes it easy and offers plenty of tools to help you chat with your buddies in an organized cool way. Share them in the comments below. :-)

~Joseph

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

What are AIM Profiles, Buddy Info and Status Messages?

Filed under: AIM Help, AIM 6, AIM Buddy Blog, Community Info, AIM Profiles Blog
I'm often asked about the differences between Profiles, Buddy Info and Status messages from AIM users. It's helpful to understand what they are and how you can manage them.

AIM Profiles (also known as "Member Directory" or "AIM Pages")
AIM Profiles are the public (or private) Web pages that you create that let you show off and tell the world all about you. AIM Profiles let you enter your favorite interests, photos, and Web links -- while also showing your Buddy Info and Status messages -- all in one page.

To edit your AIM Profile, navigate to http://editprofile.aim.com/ to get started or update it as necessary.

Buddy Info
AIM Buddy Info is a small Web page (of sorts) that AIM users can customize. Initially, AIM Buddy Info was only visible between only AIM users, but has since been posted on AIM Profiles. A popular use of the AIM Buddy Info is to post lyrics to a meaningful song, declare your relationship status or host links to your favorite Web sites. Currently, the Buddy Info has been expanded to allow pictures to be posted in it.

To edit your Buddy Info, you will need AIM software like AIM 6.5. From the AIM Buddy List, click the Edit menu then click My Buddy Info... and enter whatever you want (minding the TOS, of course).

Status Messages (also known as "Available" or "Away" Messages)
Status messages are just that -- they tell people if you're online, idle, away or even what music you're listening to. When you put up your away message and walk away from your computer, a message will be displayed informing your buddies that you are not at the computer. Status messages can also be set to serve as an away message if you're offline if you edit it and sign off.

You can manage your status messages by using AIM 6.5 and clicking on Enter a status message here..., located between your screen name and the top of the groups of buddies.

Alternatively, you may also change your Buddy Info directly from your AIM Profile by clicking on the "Edit" next to "Current Status."

Putting It All Together
Now that you know what these features are individually, you probably want to see what's the big deal about all these, right? AIM Profiles aggregates all this information into one page. With all these ways to post info about yourself, you can keep your Buddies in the know, even if you're not at the computer. Here is where everything is located on your profile:

On your AIM Profile, it will display this information for you automatically.
Thanks again for all of your comments. The most popular feedback about the changes was about how to join the discussion in AOL Chat rooms.

AOL Chat rooms require AOL Software like AOL 9.1, AOL Desktop or AOL for OS X. This is because AOL Chat rooms use a proprietary language that only AOL software can understand. I've received hundreds of comments and Instant Messages from users who want to know where their old profiles went as well as tips for customizing the new ones.

I'd like to point out that one of the huge benefits of the new AIM Profiles product is performance. It's incredibly faster to load and even quicker to save changes.

The team is still ironing out any profile migration issues that have arisen. The most common error messages are "Action Canceled," "Page Cannot Be Displayed" or "Redirecting Improperly" when you attempt to view a profile. Please send the AIM Profiles team an e-mail to MemDirReports@aol.com. They will be able to fix profiles that haven't migrated correctly. Note: This e-mail address is intended for reporting technical issues with AIM Profiles.

I'd like to respond to some of the comments and questions that you've shared with us:

"Give us back the Advanced Editor, I spent a lot of time creating my page."
Right now, we don't have any plans to integrate the older advanced editor into AIM Profiles. We understand this does limit one's creativity a little bit. However, you can still use plenty of other features such as AIM Photos, the status messages, code snippets and the additional sections on your profile.

"Help! My page doesn't look right." or "There is nothing there."
A large number of profiles have already been converted, but there are many more to go. All AIM Pages will be migrated to AIM Profiles as we informed users earlier (see here, here and also on the top of every AIM Profile page).

"How can I customize my profile with my <insert something cool>?"
AIM Profiles allows you to embed Flash-based widgets in the Code Snippet section. That is, you can copy and paste the "embed" code found on a lot of video and music Web sites. You can also find many other widgets on WidgetBox. However, at this time, JavaScript is not allowed so that we can provide a safer and secure experience.

"How can I add my own background or themes to my profile?"
The AIM Profiles Team is looking into offering additional ways you can customize your profile in the future.AIM Profiles currently offers a wide selection of over 190 themes you can style your page with. You can change the theme of your page by clicking on the "Themes" tab, then just choosing the one you want.

"How do I get that IM thing like you have on your profile?"
To do this, create a Wimzi, then copy the Flash code that it provides, and paste it into your Code Snippet section.

The AIM Profiles team very much appreciates your comments. Please continue to ask us questions, provide us constructive feedback or suggestions about AIM Profiles we'll help you the best we can. :-)

~ Joseph

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

GMail Now Includes AIM!

Filed under: AIM Help, New Features, AIM General, Developers' Corner, Featured Items, AIM Buddy Blog, Community Info
Hey folks,

Do you know anyone who is a hardcore Google Mail (GMail) user? This will bring significant changes to the layout of the page. Many of you will probably enjoy these changes since it also adds more usability to the product overall.

The new layout will boast a wider 980-pixel wide format. (To get an idea of what that looks like, check out AOL People Connection or AOL Money.) Also, they will move the Message Board Search from the bottom of the page, to the right side of the boards.

On smaller note, for channels that don't have a newer header, the team will provide a default, "AOL Message Boards" branded one, so it should look nice no matter what board you're on.

The team anticipates that between midnight (tonight) and 4AM tomorrow, the boards will be updated. Let us know how it goes and what you think of these changes in the comments below.

[Update: 12/5, 10:01AM] At this time it appears that the board servers are not accessible. We've notified the board team and they are investigating it and should be back up shortly.

[Update: 12/5, 11:18AM] Board update complete. I'll cover the basics and show you around eight different sections of your profile including how to add videos, music and slideshows.

The Basics

We couldn't have the fun of advanced stuff without understanding the fundamentals. You can manage your profile from one easy to remember address: editprofile.aim.com. Once you get there, you will have eight areas in your profile to fill in. Everything is all optional, of course.

o. About Me -- This section is self-explanatory. Enter anything you want, except for fancy HTML codes and stuff. You can put just about anything you want here.

o. My Photo -- You can upload your favorite picture of yourself, a favorite pastime time or hobby. This will become the "minipic" which is the picture that will be displayed along the upper left corner of your profile.

o. Personal Details -- You can choose to let people find you by name, display your first name on your profile, list your age and birthday, specify who you're looking for, your hometown, occupation, three favorite hyperlinks and up to four different quotes. If you really liked the old Member Directory format, this section is for you!

o. Interests -- If you love lists like I do, then you'll like this. You can list your favorite music, TV shows, books, activities and more. The terms you enter are turned into links. You can click on these to search for other users with similar interests.

o. Pictures -- You can upload all your favorite fun, wild and crazy pictures here. Do us all a favor and make sure they fall within the AIM Profiles product guidelines. This area uses the newly refined AIM Photos service instead of the AOL Pictures product.

o. Themes -- No one wants to be plain and boring, that's why we have over 190 different themes that you can choose from. No complicated codes to mess with, just point, click and save to see the changes.

o. Code Snippet -- This is where you are can add Web-based widgets like videos, music, slideshows, Wimzi's and much more! This is the only section that accepts plain-text HTML code.

o. Privacy & Settings -- You can manage your profile settings to make your profile private (the default is public), display the date that you became an AOL or AIM user, latest updates you made to your profile, hit counter, comment and buddy request preferences. Additionally, if you want to delete your AIM Profile and start again, you can click the "Reset Profile" button at the bottom.

AIM Groups took the best features within AOL Groups and made them better with the best of AIM.

This release of our Groups product will make it easy to create private and public online groups and will allow you (as a group owner) to manage the Web page for the group, as well as integrating an improved message board where everyone can discuss topics. With Groups, you can use one e-mail address to send e-mail a large group of people. It's very simple to keep everyone "in the loop" with AIM Groups.

For the users who currently use Groups@AOL or AOL Groups Beta, you don't have to change any settings. All groups, subscribers and group settings will be migrated by the Groups team to the newer AIM Groups. All you have to do is log in and check out the new Groups site. However, contents like pictures and messages will not be migrated.

If you participated in Groups@AOL or AOL Groups Beta with an AOL or AIM screen name, you're good to go. If you participated with an e-mail address, but didn't have a screen name, you'll need to create an AIM screen name (or register your e-mail address) to participate in the new Groups product. (You'll get an "invitation" e-mail with a link that will let you create a new AIM screen name.)

On this new system, the team is very confident the e-mail delivery problems which affected the older products have been resolved. To be on the safe side, make sure your recipients add the group's e-mail address to their Address Book so they won't miss any messages. (AOL Help has plenty of helpful articles related to managing your e-mail settings, if you need some help.)

AIM Groups is the solution if you want to run a mailing list. All you need is either an AOL or an AIM screen name, and you can stay in contact with your recipients. Since recipients can manage their e-mail delivery settings themselves, you don't need to worry about any bounces or cleaning off your bulk mail list.

The Groups team has plans for more exciting features in the near future. The team would like to thank everyone for their patience in this release and would like to hear your feedback on it. Please share any constructive suggestions or ideas in the comments, and we'll let them know.

[Update 12/6] AIM Groups has made it to Beta. Try it out today!

~ Joseph

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

New Feature: Pictures on Message Boards

Filed under: Tutorials, New Features, Community Info
Adding pictures on message boards is here. We've rolled out a small test to a few message boards so we can observe the usage and the overall community benefits of allowing users to upload images in their messages.

Access any of the boards listed above.

Click Create New Thread:

Type in the subject and add the text wish to add in the body of the message area.

Click the picture icon on the toolbar of the editor:

After you click the picture icon, a window will appear where you can enter in the location and other attributes of the image itself.

You can use images hosted anywhere, including those from AOL Pictures, AIM Photos, Flickr, among many others found on the Web. Once you upload your image to one of these sites, you can grab the image's URL usually from the space entitled "embed" or by right clicking the image and clicking Properties to get the address.

Once you have the URL, paste it into the URL field here, as I've done in the example shown below:

Click OK, and your image should appear now in the editor. Click Post to submit your message to the board.

Important notes:
o. This will work on an image-enabled message boards.
o. All images must comply with AOL Terms of Service and Community Guidelines for the community that you're participating it.
o. JPEG or GIF file formats work best. Other file types like TIF, PNG and BMP may not display correctly due to their proprietary formats.
o. You don't need to use the HTML code provided by some image hosts. Only the URL to the image is required. If not sure about the format of your image, right click the image and click Properties, as that will show you the format and address.
o. An up-to-date Web browser such as Internet Explorer 7 or Mozilla Firefox is recommended for the optimal experience. To add to the headaches, there's been some mutating virus (of the physical kind) that slowed many of us down. But, we've rallied and we're back. So, let me give you an update on the items that lead our task list:

Smarter moderation and enforcement tools: Two things have occurred to help speed the way to completion of this task. First, our team now "owns" the support and fix functions as well as the development of these tools. This means that we control prioritization of both feature development and support rather than having to vie with other teams for time and resources.

Second, all the MESH Team members sit near one another now, so the people responsible for policy, process and technology can toss requests, suggestions and feedback back and forth all day long. Prairie dogging and trips to the "war room" have increased exponentially. In fact, I think I heard them yell "war room" and clomp over there just a few minutes ago.

Easy to understand community standards: Once everyone has signed off on these, you will be the first to know when they'll be rolling out. There won't be any surprises except that you'll actually understand the standards if you couldn't before. And, those who did understand them (but claimed not to in attempts to worm their way out of a legitimate, well documented block) will have no excuses.

I'm tempted to call the new standards "The Seven Deadly Sins." We're aiming to have these done this week. Short of fires or floods, it should be so. In the meantime, remember that community standards are all based on Terms of Service and we all know those by heart.

New training for our teams: Though we review and train our teams on a weekly basis around here, we have done a thorough review of our curriculum. This resulted in expanded definitions and better processes related to the review and removal of user-generated content. Most of the changes were driven by a focus on our users' experience. First, we referred to all the mail we receive from users via our various feedback boxes. Then, each time we made a decision, we asked ourselves: "Can we explain this to our users? If not then why are we doing it this way?"

Clear channels for user feedback and escalations: Okay, this is a big one, especially since there are fewer of us and we want to be able to respond as quickly and effectively as possible. We've discovered that folks write to a multitude of mailboxes, some of which are appropriate and some of which don't even exist. I think many people just slap TOS in front of any old screen name and think it will go to the right place. Others write to 10 different TOS e-mail boxes each time they raise a concern. This is neither efficient nor effective if we want faster turn around times.

We want your e-mail to get to the right person and for that person to handle it quickly. When the community standards roll out we'll include the correct mailboxes to write to. We'll post that information here and in other areas, too, to get the word out. In the meantime, if you send things to AOLPeopleMGR@aol.com your mail will definitely get to the right person.

Frequent and ongoing communication with users: We will be using this blog as a way to keep you up-to-date on universal community related issues. We do not have the bandwidth to hit all message boards to ensure that folks get the information they need. Though we will still roam the boards and respond if we run across a question, we may miss something. Having this place to centralize messaging provides for better consistency. Everyone reads the same message and there's an opportunity for clarification if people need it. So feel free to ask questions of us here.

Developing better communication channels and closer relationships with product owners: This is something we work on all the time and we will continue to do so. As people step in to fill the gaps left by the actions of two weeks ago, our team will be reaching out to say hello and to bring them up to speed on what our customers are looking for in the way of features.

That's it for today. Stay tuned for more.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
