Sign in to your profile and hit the "Edit Page" button:

2. In the left column, click "Comments" and then...

3. Click the link that says "Remove certain selected comments from your page":

"Certain selected comments"? Also check out the other commenting settings.

4. Click the "x" next to the comment you want to delete:

What a troublemaker, that one.

5. On the confirmation screen, click "Delete."

That's it.

There was also a fix put in for people who had problems deleting the entire comment module.

Please let us know if you have problems with deleting comments, and sorry it took so long to fix.

Thanks -- Joe

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Update on Inability to Delete AIM Pages Profile Comments

Filed under: AIM Pages Blog, Profile Status
Hi folks -- sorry to leave you hanging on one of our ongoing problems -- the inability to delete comments in your AIM Pages profile. Here's where we are:

The problem has been happening for more than a few weeks now. Profile owners are simply not able to delete comments that have been posted to their profiles. It's definitely a problem on our side -- specifically, with the portion of AOL Journals that powers the comment module.

The good news is that the problem has been identified, and has been tested in the QA environment. So far, so good. There's a code review tomorrow and we'll know more after that.

The less-good news is it can't be installed (that is, pushed live) to production until next Tuesday, August 28, at the earliest.

I will post updates when I can confirm a date for the fix to go live. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks -- Joe

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

AIM Pages Has Been Kind of a ... Challenge to Support

Filed under: AIM Pages Blog, Profile Tips, Profile Status
I'm getting ready to redirect the old AIM Pages blog to its new home here. It's something I should have done a few weeks ago, but I've kind of been avoiding it. This is because trying to help people with AIM Pages has been kind of... well, it's been a challenge to support so far.

This is because I haven't been able to really help people in the way that I'd like to -- there are only so many ways you can say, "Clear your AOL browser footprints" or "Try downloading and installing the Firefox Web browser" -- and much of the time, those things didn't seem to work (and they didn't get to the root causes, anyway). Which means I go into the AIMPagesTeam blog comments and e-mail box with a feeling of dread.

I say this stuff now because the team has been working on a new release, currently scheduled for... later in 2007. I probably shouldn't even be saying that -- the product guys are in a kind of quiet period right now, trying to make sure we actually have something to launch by then. It's going to have some significant changes that should address many of the problems we've had since the outset.

And what about those problems? A whole raft of issues with people not being able to use Advanced Edit Mode (which was pretty core to the whole experience -- and remember, before Quick Edit Mode, it was the only edit mode available); problems with using profiles in the Internet Explorer browser and the AOL client; inability to delete profiles; all sorts of commenting trouble (including an open issue right now); problems in the interactions between Member Directory and AIM Pages... I'm sure you can tell me more.

It's been incredibly frustrating, especially since the initial concepts were so promising. Plus, we're seeing what people have been doing with Facebook Applications, which is how AIM Pages modules should have been.

I don't want to be all doom and gloom -- we've got good developers and a pretty solid plan to re-engineer the way things work. Plus, we're trying to make sure that the product folks blog and stay accessible, so that they can see the issues that regular folks have.

The goal is to have a social networking product that doesn't suck, that everyone -- not just the most technically savvy -- can use, that's well-integrated with the other community products, and that people enjoy using. Something that's not an also-ran when people talk about social networks.

I'll let you know how it goes. Or better yet, you'll let us know how it goes.

Thanks -- Joe

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Open Issue: AIM Pages Comment Deletion Problem

Filed under: AIM Pages Blog, Profile Status
Hey buddies -- here's an update on the comments deletion problem I posted about yesterday:

The team has done some investigating, and found that a code change made earlier this month is causing problems with the way AIM Pages profile comment deletions are being handled. (AOL Journals powers the commenting feature in AIM Pages, and the two systems aren't playing nice together right now.)

The two teams are working together to get a fix in, but it may take a little bit of doing. We'll post updates here when we get more information.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Thanks -- Joe

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Update on AIM Pages Comment Deletion Problem

Filed under: AIM Pages Blog, Profile Tips
Hey buddies -- here's a quick update on the issue of people being unable to delete comments from their profiles that I mentioned earlier today: The team is investigating this as a priority fix (since the ability to delete comments on your profile is an important part of the whole profile experience).

As proof, I offer this picture of Carlos, one of the principal software engineers for AIM Pages, looking over the code not 45 minutes ago (it took me a little bit to get the picture off my camera):

Carlos works on the AIM Pages comments problem. Doesn't he look like he's having fun?

Carlos just pinged me (IMed me) and he says he knows what's wrong -- since the commenting for AIM Pages relies on the AOL Journals team, we have to reach out to them. Fortunately, since we work pretty closely with the Journals team, we know just who to bother, so hopefully we'll be able to fix this soon.

I will blog an update when we know more. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Thanks -- Joe

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Open Issues With AIM Pages Profiles?

Filed under: AIM Pages Blog, Profile Tips
Hey buddies -- consider this a placeholder while I dig around and try to get some updates on some open AIM Pages profile issues; the two big ones I'm seeing right now are:

People unable to delete comments on the comment deletion screen. Back in May, the team put in a comments deletion screen, so that people could delete comments from Quick Edit mode and not have to go into Advanced Edit.

Well, I've gotten a few reports of people not being able to do this -- I'll check with the team to see if there's a problem over here, though it would be helpful if you can also see if clearing your browser cache and cookies helps.

Problems resetting profiles, so people can wipe them and start clean, or go back to a Member Directory profile. This has been a problem for a while -- some commenters have suggested it was related to people's firewall settings, but it's been hard to replicate over here one way or another. (There was also a bit of trouble between Member Directory and AIM Pages that had been messing things up, but that one should be better now.)

If you're having other problems, please leave a comment below. (The new commenting system is a little different than before -- you need to have a valid e-mail address [we won't display it or use it] so you can click on the link in a confirmation e-mail).

I'll also work with the team to get them to start talking about some of the changes we can look forward to later this summer.

Thanks -- Joe

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Advice to Bosses: Employees Don't Have to Be Your Friends Online

Filed under: Social Networking, Social Media Mess, AIM Pages Blog, Outside the Profile
On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal's Jared Sandberg raised the issue of online friending in the workplace: "OMG -- My Boss Wants to 'Friend' Me On My Online Profile." [Link via Valleywag]

This is a particularly thorny issue, since it involves generational differences (your boss may be older than you, and probably uses online social media differently); power relationships (are you comfortable saying no to your boss?); and the whole problem of blurring the lines between personal and work lives (it may be a fiction, but it's a convenient one).

Then there's that whole Too Much Information thing. Obligatory best quote from the article:

"When you see your client's pubic bone, something has changed."

Of course, it depends on your comfort level, and how you use different social networks. In my case, professionally-oriented networks like LinkedIn are a no-brainer. I don't really use Facebook for personal stuff, so it's become a kind of professional playground for me. Same thing for AIM Pages.

Even if you have a good relationship with your bosses, having them as part of your online social network gives them a whole 'nother level of access into your personal life. Sure, it's just a Google search away anyway, but the sharing nature of social networks pushes your life out in front of their faces, in convenient feed format -- your musical tastes, your blog entries, your photos, your circle of friends, and whatever craziness you get involved with after hours.

Part of the solution will be technical --the ability to assign different levels of access to different groups. For example, Flickr lets you make individual photos available to friends-only, or family-only. SixApart's Vox takes a similar tack. Facebook provides an option for limited profiles, where you can hide particular profile elements from people. And we've thrown around ideas for rostering by tag. If you do it right, people don't even need to know they're not seeing the whole picture.

Part of the solution will be behavioral -- if you do friend your boss, you might have to tone down your behavior (or at least, the bits that you choose to post to your social profile). Or create alternate identities online, though the ease of finding people online via search really only delays the inevitable.

I think that bosses should restrain themselves when it comes to friending people they have power over. (Incidentally, I'm at peace with the verb-ification of "friend".) There's a world of difference between knowing a profile exists and checking in on it from time to time, versus getting updates fed to you. Don't put your employees in that kind of situation.

Plus, you're the boss. You don't have to be cool (and you probably aren't). If your minion thinks you truly are cool and invites you to friend them, then, hey, it's on them (or they're just trying to suck up).

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Welcome to Our Madness

As we launch our new AIM Social Media Blog and give you access to all the crazy happenings, insights, and tips from within the world of the big, red AIM bubble, I wanted to give a (very) brief introduction to the AIM Pages audience: Howdy. I'm Matt and I'm from Kansas. You'll have to click my smiling face (or here) to learn more about me.

Up until now, Joe has done a marveloustastic job of keeping you up-to-date within AIM's ever-changing social networking world over at Our Blog. Now, I certainly understand that there are some who are chompin' at the bit for information while we're gearing up to give you the most groundbreaking news going forward. Well... read on, my newfound friend.

Here at our spacious, new pad, you'll be able to find out all sorts of other AIMciting things (along with some fascinating tips, tidbits, and discussion that might be entirely unrelAIMted). Leave comments! Get involved! We're eagerly awaiting your feedback. I promise I'll stop sticking 'AIM' into my words. At least, I'll try not to.

That's all you get from me for now, but keep checking back, as my colleagues like to blog.
