Upcoming Important AOL Community Changes

In the next several weeks, we'll no longer moderate "AOL Managed" community areas. We provide tools (like message board filters) that empower the user experience, as well as the ability to report inappropriate content to us for further review via Notify AOL. 
In the next several weeks, you will notice some changes as it pertains to AOL Community. Specifically, the AOLPeopleMGR mailbox will be decommissioned and all message boards will be migrated to a Member-Managed experience.
For a while now, we've informed you to write to AOLPeopleMGR for any concerns relating to AOL Community. As of February 8, we'll consolidate AOLPeopleMGR into the TOSGeneral@aol.com mailbox. Rest assured, you can still let our team know of any egregious Terms of Service violations or general questions relating to the enforcement of the Terms of Service and we'll handle it within 48 hours.

1. Joe---on reading the Member Managed area as provided by the link, I think there's going to be confusion between the AOLPeopleMgr mailbox and the TosGeneral@aol.com mailboxes or who to contact or report TOS violations to. On the one hand you say the AOLPeopleMgr mailbox is going to be decommission and then in the explanation area under FAQ, you give a link to AOLPeopleMgr. To me, there needs to be clarification as to exactly where to send Notify AOL post to, because TOS violations and reports are different than writing because you don't think your post should have been removed, or you want clarification. Now, have I confused you enough Franki

3. Hey Joe,
Remember when the ultimate chic in social media was hosted by a volunteer SysOp on HRB's CompuServe? Then, these dudes from Time-Warner showed up and announced that professionally managed forums were the future. Stimulated by incredible Internet stock IPO performance, the Blochs spun off CompuServe. And who could have guessed then that "digital convergence" meant the mergers of AOL, TWX, and HRB's CompuServe? I think we are witnessing the denouement of this story, which might be a Harvard Business Review case study in business disruption.
Denouement is French for "unraveling." The new president at Time-Warner wisely chooses to untie the social media from the advertising revenue stream. While forthcoming changes look a bit driven by the profit motive (and the _timing_ of Microsoft's offer for Yahoo only serves to emphasize this aspect of Time-Warner's decisions), let's consider the possibility that Time-Warner's commercial Web media are coming of age. There's a great tradition in conventional print media which says the content editors and the advertising department don't chat each other up. Serious journalists understand this.
So the vintage 1992 CompuServe (mostly) community-policed model prevails, but with advertising. Now if we could just resurrect vintage 1992 automated off-line message board software! Window's Synchronize feature is a poor substitute for Oz and simply can't _sign in_ to AOL.

P. S. AOL desperately needs to add a search tool to the front page for message boards. That three-column topic grid is mighty rigid. What if I want to discuss modern art, for example? (Yes, I can do a global Web search, but AOL could be more helpful here.)

5. So no more AOLPeopleMgr@aol.com. All the TOS e-mail goes to the foreign Mod Squad now? Responses from those emailboxes are not helpful.
Looks like MESH might be phased out, yes?? And now that all message boards are member-managed, even the foreign Mod Squad has less responsibility, yes? (I hope they got a pay cut!)
What exactly are you and Nancie going to do now? I'm still waiting for that MESH update promised in early November. : - )
The message boards are going to be a big junkyard now. Inappropriate photos posted (and foreigners are going to decide what is and isn't appropriate), message board vigilantes deciding what does and doesn't get posted (the foreign Mod Squad often removes posts if someone...ANYone...claims they are offensive). And then of course there is the loss of the old format. Nancie told us years ago that we would have advance notice. Not even a day and a half's notice! I know, I know...you and she were kept out of the loop. We've figured that out, since you could never get answers from the message board team (you never did "get traction" on those questions from last July, remember?). I understand that some folks were reporting the message boards changed over even before today, February 7th.
I know that AOL doesn't care. "Users" aren't advertisers, and THAT is what it's all about.
I just wish that MESH/CAT/whatever/whoever had been a little more forthcoming with us.

6. I, too, have been terminated after ten years as an AOL customer. Same experience as the others. NO SATISFACTION or reasonable reason from AOL. A TOS for calling republicans liars? A TOS for using the EXACT same words as the poster I was responding to? A TOS for taking part in a message board in the same way ALL the others were?
For that you screw up the lives of my entire family by making it impossible for all of us to communicate with the E-mail accounts and contacts they've had for ten YEARS????
It's time restore all these accounts which have been terminated unjustly.

7. Hi Joseph and or Kelly
I understand AOL is focused on the New Format. I don't care for it but I think the children should love it for the neato way you can add cool pictures to posts and such. Sure its cumbersome and lacks the user speed of the old format....and has hiccups every time you select a function.....but its new and that's what counts. I just question if the thought could be revisited..."Did we really have to close all of the back doors to users who preferred old format?".
I ask because I have used new and old for some time. So, its not a question of getting used to it...its really a matter of New Format being less while old is truly better. Why does it have to be all or nothing? Can you not offer "Options" of old or new?
I have been reading all of the responses to AOL's choice and it sure seems clear that users of Old Format would love to continue using it. What could it hurt to leave a couple of back doors for that purpose?
As to TosGeneral taking over all complaints now....I hope it will be with a new team. The Tos General Team that we have pleaded with in the past to assist with trolls..responds with form letters and does nothing.
Trolls ruin the board experience for all. I think any AOL Employee knows this. Yet...Ask Him or Her has two trolls that are blatant trouble makers who tag team regular posters. The object is for one to insult and draw out posters for the other troll to send TOS requests on them. This has gone on for years and Joseph was the only one to ever help with this duo.
Now, with the changes that will block a troll from making new names, we need more than ever to have support in dealing with them....because once dealt with, they cannot keep returning with new names (at last).
On the up side of all of this....if all back doors to Old Format are going to remain shut....all of us who mostly use AOL for message boards will have no reason to keep the software on our computers anymore. Of course....I suspect that means we will miss most of the ads. The buying power, or target audience that you have earned through the years are the middle aged posters and non poster members. Many of us have been with you 10 years or more. As we change over to free aol.....remove aol software....and post less because of the format changes....do you think that the teens you are left with will have our buying power? If not, how do you suppose this might impact an ad driven company? Any person with a degree in Marketing tracks the cost effectiveness of all media. As the test marketing period ends..they trim those ads that were not cost effective.
Format change, Troll Control change....I hope it all works out.

8. Hello. Very Disappointed!!!!!!!!!!
As far as I can tell, AOL quit giving us access to
International Message boards, such as Asia, Japan, for pen pals and other cultural exchanges.
It was far and above the most enjoyable part of AOL, and you could dial it up without registration or monthly fee, and meet many interesting people.
Am I the only one that misses these International
message board that required no registration or fee, or
did they move somewhere else and I have lost them.

Lawsuits Among Believers

Sexual Immorality

Israel Forsakes God
1 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 "Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem:
" 'I remember the devotion of your youth,
how as a bride you loved me
and followed me through the desert,
through a land not sown.
3 Israel was holy to the LORD,
the firstfruits of his harvest;
all who devoured her were held guilty,
and disaster overtook them,' "
declares the LORD.
4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob,
all you clans of the house of Israel.
5 This is what the LORD says:
"What fault did your fathers find in me,
that they strayed so far from me?
They followed worthless idols
and became worthless themselves.
6 They did not ask, 'Where is the LORD,
who brought us up out of Egypt
and led us through the barren wilderness,
through a land of deserts and rifts,
a land of drought and darkness, [a]
a land where no one travels and no one lives?'
7 I brought you into a fertile land
to eat its fruit and rich produce.
But you came and defiled my land
and made my inheritance detestable.
8 The priests did not ask,
'Where is the LORD ?'
Those who deal with the law did not know me;
the leaders rebelled against me.
The prophets prophesied by Baal,
following worthless idols.
9 "Therefore I bring charges against you again,"
declares the LORD.
"And I will bring charges against your children's children.
10 Cross over to the coasts of Kittim [b] and look,
send to Kedar [c] and observe closely;
see if there has ever been anything like this:
11 Has a nation ever changed its gods?
(Yet they are not gods at all.)
But my people have exchanged their [d] Glory
for worthless idols.
12 Be appalled at this, O heavens,
and shudder with great horror,"

13 "My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken me,
the spring of living water,
and have dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
14 Is Israel a servant, a slave by birth?
Why then has he become plunder?
15 Lions have roared;
they have growled at him.
They have laid waste his land;
his towns are burned and deserted.
16 Also, the men of Memphis [e] and Tahpanhes

17 Have you not brought this on yourselves
by forsaking the LORD your God
when he led you in the way?
18 Now why go to Egypt

Consider then and realize
how evil and bitter it is for you

20 "Long ago you broke off your yoke
and tore off your bonds;
you said, 'I will not serve you!'
Indeed, on every high hill
and under every spreading tree
you lay down as a prostitute.
21 I had planted you like a choice vine
of sound and reliable stock.
How then did you turn against me
into a corrupt, wild vine?
22 Although you wash yourself with soda
and use an abundance of soap,
the stain of your guilt is still before me,"
declares the Sovereign LORD.
23 "How can you say, 'I am not defiled;
I have not run after the Baals'?
See how you behaved in the valley;
consider what you have done.
You are a swift she-camel
running here and there,
24 a wild donkey accustomed to the desert,
sniffing the wind in her craving—
in her heat who can restrain her?
Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves;
at mating time they will find her.
25 Do not run until your feet are bare
and your throat is dry.
But you said, 'It's no use!
I love foreign gods,
and I must go after them.'
26 "As a thief is disgraced when he is caught,
so the house of Israel is disgraced—
they, their kings and their officials,
their priests and their prophets.
27 They say to wood, 'You are my father,'
and to stone, 'You gave me birth.'
They have turned their backs to me
and not their faces;
yet when they are in trouble, they say,
'Come and save us!'
28 Where then are the gods you made for yourselves?
Let them come if they can save you
when you are in trouble!
For you have as many gods
as you have towns, O Judah.
29 "Why do you bring charges against me?
You have all rebelled against me,"
declares the LORD.
30 "In vain I punished your people;
they did not respond to correction.
Your sword has devoured your prophets
like a ravening lion.
31 "You of this generation, consider the word of the LORD :
"Have I been a desert to Israel
or a land of great darkness?
Why do my people say, 'We are free to roam;
we will come to you no more'?
32 Does a maiden forget her jewelry,
a bride her wedding ornaments?
Yet my people have forgotten me,
days without number.
33 How skilled you are at pursuing love!
Even the worst of women can learn from your ways.
34 On your clothes men find
the lifeblood of the innocent poor,
though you did not catch them breaking in.

35 you say, 'I am innocent;
he is not angry with me.'
But I will pass judgment on you
because you say, 'I have not sinned.'
36 Why do you go about so much,
changing your ways?
You will be disappointed by Egypt

for the LORD has rejected those you trust;

1 Corinthians 6
Lawsuits Among Believers
1If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints? 2Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? 3Do you not know that we will judge angels?
How much more the things of this life!
4Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, appoint as judges even men of little account in the church![a] 5I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? 6But instead, one brother goes to law against another—and this in front of unbelievers!
7The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? 8Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers.
9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Sexual Immorality
12"Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13"Food for the stomach and the stomach for food"—but God will destroy them both. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh."[b] 17But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.
18Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. 19Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
