Fix: Windows Vista and AIM 6.5 'Connection Status' Issue
For a while now, those of you using the latest Microsoft operating system, Windows Vista, have reported a unique problem with AIM 6.5 and Vista where the network connections icon says you're disconnected, but you're not. Admittedly, it stumped us for a bit as we investigated -- but now we have a fix that should remedy this problem in just a few steps. We posted the details regarding the fix on the AOL Help Web site, with an easy to remember URL so you can share it with your other buddies who use Windows Vista:
Essentially, you will need to uninstall the AIM software, enable the User Account Control (UAC) security setting, download some Windows Updates, download and install AIM again. All these details (including pictures) are available at this help article. There's also a more colorful version of it available here, too.
We understand this can be frustrating and AIM and Microsoft teams are currently working on providing a long-term solution. In the meantime, be sure that you are using the latest version of AIM and install updates that you might receive in the future.
We'd like to know if this fixed the problem! Please feel welcome to leave feedback in the comments below, or drop on by the message board to discuss it with other avid AIM users.

1. Will this "fix" take care of my VISTA/AIM 6.5 problems:
1. You do not have a camera. (I have a Logiteach QuickCam for Notebooks Deluxe.)
2. You are not connected at this time.
3. Blue screen system crashes

2. I followed the steps in your "fix" and was able to have a video chat; however, when my daughter disconnected I still experienced a BLUE SCREEN SYSTEM CRASH. Please investigate further and notify me when you have a fix for this annoying problem.
THanks.

4. The thing I find amusing is that UAC is designed to prevent unauthorized changes to your computer...why would AIM be making changes to a computer system that would compromise it's security? Hmmm...I think I will hold off on AIM for a while until they fix the problem on their end. Granted MS sucks, but come on...why is AIM screwing things up? I shouldn't have to go through all this stuff to "fix" a problem that shouldn't be a problem to begin with. All the other messengers work with no errors, whats the deal?

5. Installed the fix. Connection Status is still of-line w/ the same error. Wouldn't ever install AIM again!

6. Went through all the steps and STILL receive the same error as before!!! Something is really wrong with this. I think Pidgin or even Yahoo or MSN will work just as well until this issue can be solved.
